Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) shows improved performance in Q1 FY27, driven by financial prudence, operational measures, and strategic investments.

The Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has reported a significant improvement in its Q1 FY27 performance. According to Dr. Ashok Kumar Panda, the Chairman & Managing Director of SAIL, this success is due to the company's integrated strategy that combines financial acumen and operational foresight.

In terms of financial management, SAIL has focused on reducing borrowings and lowering the cost of borrowings. The company's strong cash flow management, strict financial controls, and sharper working capital practices have contributed to a marked improvement in its debt–equity ratio and net debt–EBITDA profile.

In Q1 FY27, SAIL has also made progress in its product mix and investment priorities. The proportion of finished steel in the total saleable steel increased to 89%, indicating a gradual reduction of semis in the company’s overall product basket. Additionally, the percentage of value-added steel dispatches increased by 7.5%.

CAPEX exceeded the target from ₹2,306 Crore to ₹2,575 Crore, demonstrating SAIL's strong commitment to strategic investments and proactive allocation of resources towards capacity expansion and modernization.

Operationally, blast furnace productivity improved, steelmaking economics were optimized, and scheduled capital repairs were advanced proactively. The company also showed resilience in the face of supply chain disruptions by securing alternate sources for limestone and Propane gas.

SAIL's focused thrust on mining operations delivered impressive results, with enhanced iron ore production enabling the Company to meet its internal raw material requirements and sell surplus ore in the domestic market. Iron ore sales during Q1FY27 registered a 269% growth over the corresponding period of the previous year.
