Lovepreet Singh wins silver in men’s 110 kg category, Seema Kaliramna bags bronze in women’s discus throw, Neeraj Chopra qualifies for finals in men’s javelin throw and two Indian triple jumpers advance to the final.
Indian weightlifter Lovepreet Singh secured a silver medal in the men's 110 kg category at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. He lifted a Games record 176kg in the snatch but narrowly missed out on gold as New Zealand’s David Liti clinched the top spot with 389kg. England’s Andrew Griffiths took the bronze medal with a total of 356kg.
In the women’s discus throw, Seema Kaliramna won the bronze medal with a throw of 58.65 meters, while compatriot Nidhi Rani finished fourth. Jamaica’s Samantha Hall won the gold with a Games-leading throw of 61.66 meter, while Canada’s Julia Tunks took silver with 60.67 meter.
Apart from weightlifting, Indian athletes have also shown impressive performances in athletics events. Neeraj Chopra qualified for the men’s javelin throw finals. Javelin throwers Rohit Yadav and Yashvir Singh have also entered the finals. Neeraj finished fifth, Rohit Yadav 9th and Yashvir Singh 10th in the qualification round.
Two Indian triple jumpers, Praveen Chithravel and Selva Prabhu Thirumaran advanced to the final. Tejaswin Shankar also remains in medal contention in the men’s decathlon, ending the opening day in second place with 4,339 points after five events.
