Mumbai's Metro Line 7A may require demolition and rebuilding due to a planning error concerning height clearance for overhead electrical equipment. The line has already missed several deadlines.
Construction work worth Rs 250 crore on Mumbai’s Metro Line 7A might necessitate demolition and subsequent rebuilding, as reported by The Indian Express. An unidentified official stated that a 1 km viaduct in Vile Parle East lacks the necessary height clearance for the overhead electrical equipment. This line is an extension of Metro Line 7 from Andheri East to the Mumbai airport, spanning 3.4 km. The issue arises because the stretch falls within the airport funnel zone, where the Airports Authority of India imposes height restrictions. When the no-objection certificates for the project were issued in 2022, the additional height for the overhead electrical equipment was not accounted for in the design, resulting in a height mismatch of about 2.5 metres. Construction on this stretch has been halted since the concern was raised in 2025, and revised permissions have been sought from the Airports Authority of India. If a solution is not found, the viaduct may need to be reconstructed, as another unidentified official noted.
