The Maharashtra government has granted autorickshaw and taxi drivers an additional year to acquire basic Marathi language skills, as per discussions held regarding the enforcement of this requirement.
In light of recent enforcement and subsequent discussions on the necessity for autorickshaw and taxi drivers to learn basic Marathi, the Maharashtra government has decided to extend the deadline by one year. This extension means that no action will be taken against these drivers during this period if they fail to meet the language requirement.
Speaking to reporters in Mumbai yesterday, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed the state government's decision to give autorickshaw and taxi drivers an extra year to learn Marathi. He stated that no penalties would be imposed during this period for non-compliance with the language requirement.
Autorickshaw and taxi unions have expressed their approval of the state government’s decision. Yesterday, a delegation of these unions, headed by Haji Arfat, met with the Chief Minister and voiced its readiness to learn Marathi. The union also requested additional time to meet this requirement.
