The Delhi government has proposed a draft E-Rickshaw Policy, aiming to cap the number of e-rickshaws at 2.5 lakh, improve road safety, and strengthen last-mile connectivity.
The Delhi government has taken a significant step towards regulating e-rickshaw operations in the national capital by proposing a cap on their number, capping them at 2.5 lakh. This proposal is part of a draft E-Rickshaw Policy that has been made available to the public for a month, inviting suggestions and feedback from stakeholders before its finalisation. The policy aims not only to streamline e-rickshaw operations but also to improve road safety, strengthen last-mile connectivity, and address traffic congestion.
In addition to the proposed cap, the government is considering implementing mandatory compliance certification, fitness requirements, valid licensing, and vehicle identification to ensure that only eligible vehicles operate on city roads. The policy is being formulated after careful consideration to balance commuters’ needs with the requirement for disciplined traffic management.
Dr Pankaj Kumar Singh, Delhi Transport Minister, stated that the proposed framework will also seek to address overloading and ensure compliance with prescribed passenger capacity, fitness, and safety standards. He further explained that following consultation and finalisation of the policy, the government plans to initiate its implementation process within 90 days.
By implementing these measures, the Delhi government hopes to create a more organized and safe e-rickshaw ecosystem, thereby improving road safety and enhancing last-mile connectivity in the city.
