In a significant move towards enhancing road safety in Madhya Pradesh, Retired Supreme Court Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre, Chairman of the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety, has underscored the importance of community participation in preventing road accidents and animal-related fatalities. He has called for the formation of local-level committees, offering incentives to encourage their support and efforts.
The Zero-Fatality District Programme is set to be launched in Indore, Bhopal, and Ujjain, following its implementation in six districts—Dhar, Satna, Rewa, Sagar, Jabalpur, and Khargone. The programme aims to ensure time-bound implementation of short- and long-term plans to prevent road accidents caused by animals and other factors.
In an effort to address the issue of uninsured vehicles, a pilot project is being planned to install cameras at petrol pumps, linked with the Vahan Portal, to identify and prevent fuel supply to such vehicles. The district with the highest number of uninsured vehicles will be selected for the pilot initiative.
The meeting also decided to strengthen public awareness to prevent road accidents, seeking cooperation from the Education Department and other agencies for undertaking public awareness campaigns through educational institutions.
