The United Nations Chief, Antonio Guterres, will underscore the necessity of multilateral institutions reform during his speech at the upcoming BRICS Summit in New Delhi. He is also expected to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other officials attending the summit.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is set to emphasize the significance of multipolarity and the need for reforming multilateral institutions, particularly the Security Council, during his speech at the BRICS Summit in New Delhi. The event is scheduled for September 13th, with the theme being 'Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability: Shaping the Future for Inclusive Global Growth'.
Talking to reporters in New York, United Nations chief’s spokesperson Stephane Dujarric confirmed that Mr. Guterres will address the opening session on the said date.
The call for Security Council reform has been a long-standing demand of several countries, including India, who argue that the current composition of the 15-member body does not align with the geopolitical and economic realities of the 21st century. One of India's key objectives in this campaign is securing a permanent seat within the UN's top decision-making body.
Spokesperson Dujarric also stated that Mr. Guterres is expected to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and hold bilateral meetings with other officials attending the summit.
