This article highlights the fourth anniversary celebration of the intercontinental cheetah translocation project, launched by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi four years ago in Kuno National Park. The event will feature thousands of diyas being lit at Tiktoli Gate as a gesture of gratitude.
Four years ago, on September 17, 2022, a new chapter began in the history of wildlife conservation in Madhya Pradesh when Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi launched the intercontinental cheetah translocation project at Kuno National Park by releasing cheetahs brought from Namibia onto Indian soil. To mark the fourth anniversary and Prime Minister Shri Modi’s birthday, thousands of diyas will be lit at Tiktoli Gate in Kuno on September 17 as a gesture of gratitude.
The illumination will symbolise the resolve and achievement through which cheetahs, once extinct in India, are now roaming freely on the country’s soil. The birth of cubs at Kuno and the growing cheetah population underline the significant milestones achieved during this journey.
The lighting of diyas will not only be part of a ceremonial event but also symbolise gratitude for the return of cheetahs to India and the commitment to nature conservation. Cheetahs sprinting through the forests of Kuno, cubs born in India, increasing tourism, and Sheopur’s growing global recognition reflect the achievements of the four-year journey.
The total number of cheetahs in India has reached 52 after completion of four years of Project Cheetah. Of these, 49 are in Kuno National Park and three are in Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary in Mandsaur. Of the total 52 cheetahs, 32 have been born in India.
Surrounded by the picturesque hills of the Vindhya mountain range, Kuno National Park is a major tourist attraction because of its natural beauty. The Kuno River further enhances the landscape. Crocodiles basking on its broad, flat banks offer visitors an exciting wildlife experience. Kuno National Park is home to 174 species of birds and hundreds of species of wildlife.
The cheetah reintroduction project has given Sheopur a new identity in India and across the world. Sheopur is now recognised internationally as an important centre for cheetah conservation.
