The number of universities in Madhya Pradesh has increased from 13 to 81, and student enrolment has risen substantially over the past 24 years. Financial investment in higher education has also nearly tripled.
Madhya Pradesh had a total of 13 universities in 2002, including 11 under the Higher Education Department and two under other departments. In 2026, the state has 81 universities—17 government and 54 private universities under the Higher Education Department, along with 10 universities under other departments. This expansion reflects the widening institutional base of higher education in the state and the growing range of opportunities available to students.
In the 2002-03 academic session, 2,46,634 students were enrolled in colleges. By 2024-25, the number had risen to 12,10,635, an increase of 9,64,001 students. Thus, college enrolment grew nearly 4.9-fold over the period, reflecting a substantial increase in participation in higher education alongside its institutional expansion.
The Higher Education Department’s budget provision, which stood at ₹290.43 crore in 2002-03, increased to ₹4,296.91 crore in 2026-27. This represents an increase of ₹4,006.48 crore, taking the budget provision to nearly 14.8 times its 2002-03 level.
