The West Bengal government has started identifying land for a proposed greenfield airport in Kalyani, aiming to reduce pressure on Kolkata Airport and improve air connectivity in South Bengal. The administration has temporarily stopped registration of land sale and purchase documents in certain areas.
The West Bengal government has commenced the process of identifying approximately 2,000 acres of land across nine mouzas, including Kalyani and Birpara, in the Nadia district for a proposed greenfield airport project. This initiative is intended to alleviate congestion at Kolkata Airport and enhance air connectivity within South Bengal. The administration has also suspended registration of land sale and purchase documents in these areas temporarily.
The state government announced this greenfield airport project in its budget for the current year, emulating the model of Navi Mumbai Greenfield Airport. Following the completion of land acquisition and administrative processes, the Detailed Project Report and construction schedule will be finalised.
In addition to the Kalyani project, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced yesterday that the state government will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) on 28th September for the development of four airports under the Centre’s regional connectivity scheme UDAN. The proposed developments will take place at Chharra in Purulia, Balurghat in South Dinajpur, Hasimara in Alipurduar, and Kalaikunda in West Midnapore.
