Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai has expressed optimism about resolving the long-standing Mahanadi water dispute through dialogue. This dispute, which began in 2018 and is currently before the Mahanadi Water Disputes Tribunal, has now been referred to the Central Water Commission. The issue stemmed from Odisha's objections over upstream barrages in Chhattisgarh, alleging reduced downstream flows during lean periods.
In recent months, both states have expressed a willingness for an amicable settlement through dialogue and technical consultations. A meeting between Chief Ministers Vishnu Deo Sai and Mohan Charan Majhi was facilitated by the Centre on July 30 under the chairmanship of Union Jal Shakti Minister C R Paatil.
