This expanded article delves deeper into the details of the defamation case filed by Vikram Sherawat against journalist Sudhir Chaudhary and public broadcaster Doordarshan News, focusing on the events leading up to the protests, the alleged misidentification, and the removal of posts.
In a recent development, Journalist Sudhir Chaudhary appeared in the Delhi High Court to address a defamation case filed by Vikram Sherawat. The case stems from an incident during the July youth protests, where Chaudhary allegedly misidentified Sherawat as someone who called for the destruction of Parliament. Sherawat, a 28-year-old civil services aspirant and volunteer of the Cockroach Janta Party, had filed the case against Chaudhary and public broadcaster Doordarshan News.
According to Bar and Bench, during his July 27 broadcast, Chaudhary described Sherawat as an 'anti-national'. This allegation has led Sherawat to seek Rs 5 crore in damages from Chaudhary, Essprit Productions, and Doordarshan News.
On Tuesday, Chaudhary's counsel informed the court that he had written to social media platforms, asking them to remove any posts by third parties related to the case. The removal of these posts could be a significant development in the ongoing defamation case. However, it is worth noting that Sherawat wishes to pursue the case further.
The events leading up to the protests began on June 6, when protesters gathered at Jantar Mantar to demonstrate against alleged mismanagement of several competitive examinations. On July 20, thousands joined the protest, which came two days after the police forcibly took activist Sonam Wangchuk, who had been on a hunger strike for three weeks, to hospital. The protesters' march to Parliament was met with a crackdown by police, resulting in numerous injuries and the use of force such as lathis, tear gas shells, and pellet guns.
In his petition, Sherawat stated that the alleged statement was made by an unidentified person at a different event. However, Chaudhary wrongly claimed that he had made it during the demonstration on July 20. Furthermore, Chaudhary broadcast a low-quality version of the footage so that the two men featured in it could not be distinguished. These are key points that have been raised in the defamation case.
