Two election commissioners objected to decisions related to the SIR over a period of 10 months. The opposition is planning to file a fresh impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and demand a Supreme Court-monitored investigation.
Many Indian newspapers reported on Thursday about two election commissioners, Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, having objected to decisions related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls over a period of 10 months. These objections were made over various matters such as new registration of voters, changes to Form 6, appeals against the inclusion of voters in West Bengal, and handling of voter data in Goa, among others. In one written objection, Commissioner Sukhbir Singh Sandhu stated that the poll panel had acted against their advice and described the action as 'unauthorised and illegal'. The opposition is now planning to file a fresh impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and demand a Supreme Court-monitored investigation into the matter. The newspapers also reported on the Supreme Court’s decision to refer pleas challenging the constitutionality of a 2023 law for the appointment of election commissioners to a larger bench, and the Election Commission's statement that operational queries or inputs raised by commission members during draft stages are part of standard administrative practice to safeguard voter rights.
