The West Bengal Congress has taken the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Nandigram bye-poll candidate, Hasirani Rath, to the Calcutta High Court over a discrepancy in her stated age and the year she claims to have passed Class 10 examinations. The Congress alleges that Rath's affidavit contains factually inconsistent details.
The West Bengal Congress has questioned the election affidavit of BJP’s Nandigram bye-poll candidate Hasirani Rath over a discrepancy in her age and Class 10 examination year. According to the Congress's petition, Rath has stated her age as ‘60+ years’ but has also mentioned passing the Class 10 examination from Chowkhali Ganga Padma Milan Kanya Vidyapith in 1965. If Rath is between 60 and 65 years old now, she would have been between four and nine years old at that time, as reported by Live Law. Congress leader and advocate Riju Ghosal raised this matter before Justice Krishna Rao, stating that the affidavit contains details that appear to be factually inconsistent. The Congress seeks cancellation of Rath's candidature if the educational qualification mentioned in the affidavit is found to be incorrect. It is important to note that the Election Commission had scrutinized Rath’s affidavit but did not take action over the alleged discrepancy, as Live Law reported. However, the BJP has countered that Rath was a Class 10 student at the school mentioned in 1980, not as indicated in the affidavit, according to The Hindu.
