The Delhi High Court has directed Meta to remove a deepfake image within 24 hours that depicted a woman alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The court also issued notices and ordered protection for the woman due to threats to her life.
On Friday, the Delhi High Court ordered Meta to remove a deepfake content within 24 hours that was found objectionable. According to Bar and Bench, the purported image showed a woman alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi and had been shared during July's youth protests. The woman claimed that protest organizers used an artificial intelligence face-swapping tool to superimpose her face on a vulgar image with Modi. The image was reportedly printed on banners, displayed at Jantar Mantar during the protest, and shared online.
The court issued notices to leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party named in the woman's petition over allegations of sharing the image. Additionally, the Delhi Police were directed to provide protection for the woman due to threats to her life. The woman's counsel informed the court that an FIR had already been registered in connection with the allegations, but no steps had been taken to apprehend those responsible or remove the defamatory content.
The bench stated that if the Delhi Police fail to act sensitively, the court would ensure they do so. The woman's counsel also informed the court that the matter was not just about 'one lady' but also involved the prime minister.
