Punjab MLA Sukhveer Singh Maiserkhana suspended by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for alleged anti-party activities, indiscipline, and his public criticism of teacher shortage in state-run schools. The suspension follows Maiserkhana's repeated demands to party leaders, including Manish Sisodia, to address the issue.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) suspended Punjab MLA Sukhveer Singh Maiserkhana on Saturday for 'anti-party activities and indiscipline'. The suspension came hours after Maiserkhana accused the state government of not addressing a shortage of teachers in state-run schools in his constituency. In a video posted on social media, Maiserkhana stated that he regretted enrolling his children in government schools due to a lack of teaching staff in these institutions.
The legislator from Maur in Bathinda claimed that several requests to AAP leaders, including former Delhi education minister and the party’s Punjab in-charge Manish Sisodia, had failed to fill the vacant positions in government schools. Maiserkhana further alleged that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann refused to meet him.
Maiserkhana claimed that even the Schools of Eminence, which the AAP government established as model institutes to showcase its education policies, do not have enough teachers. He stated that his children study in these schools, highlighting the issue from a personal perspective. According to The Indian Express, Maiserkhana is the only MLA in the 117-member Punjab Assembly whose children study in government schools.
Following Maiserkhana's public appeal for state-run schools in Punjab, leaders from other political parties also criticised the AAP. The polls in Punjab are expected to be held by February 2027.
In response to Maiserkhana's allegations, the AAP denied his claims and accused him of defaming the Mann government. The party stated that its School of Eminence in Bathinda has 30 sanctioned teaching posts, of which 25 are currently filled.
