Ambedkar University Delhi has taken disciplinary action against eleven students, suspending them on Wednesday following an alleged confrontation between the students and security personnel at the Kashmere Gate campus. The incident took place before a planned screening of Anand Patwardhan’s documentary Jai Bhim Comrade at the institute's Wall of Democracy. According to The Indian Express, this demonstration was part of a sit-in protest by the All India Students Association (AISA)-led students’ collective of the university that began on July 31.
The university administration has accused the students of misbehaving with security personnel and attempting to break a campus gate. The Indian Express also reports that security personnel tore down posters of the documentary, switched off the electricity on the campus around 6 pm, and allegedly assaulted students during the incident.
In addition to the alleged misconduct, the students are protesting against a university circular issued on July 31, which requires four working days' notice for organising demonstrations, rallies, marches and other public gatherings on campus. They have also demanded the removal of iron gates and barriers on campus, fee waiver for PhD students, and completion of faculty recruitment.
