The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) alleged that its convenor Ashutosh Ranka and nearly 30 volunteers were detained by the Assam Police on Sunday during a meeting in Dispur. According to Ranka, the entire road leading to the meeting site was barricaded from both sides, and Assam Police had ready tear gas.
In a video shared on social media, a volunteer of the campaign, on his way to the meeting at a private property, could be seen being detained in a police vehicle. Ranka alleged that no one was allowed to reach the site of the meeting.
On another occasion an hour later, Ranka could be seen in a police vehicle being taken to an undisclosed location. He claimed that he was detained due to the political campaign's intention to reveal the reality of Assam's schools and a hotel project at Ingle Pathar, a village adjoining the Kaziranga National Park.
The CJP has launched a nationwide drive to improve the condition of government schools. The party has been sharing videos of schools recorded by its volunteers in several states on social media. It's worth noting that Assam activist Pranab Doley, who has been opposing a proposed luxury hotel near Kaziranga National Park, was arrested in July in connection with protests.
