The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has increased the number of Assaying and Hallmarking Centres and registered jewellers, aiming to ensure purity in silver purchases during the festive season.
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has expanded its Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID)-based silver hallmarking ecosystem. As many as 341 silver Assaying and Hallmarking Centres (AHCs) have been set up across 102 districts, with over 25,000 silver jewellers registered with BIS. This development is significant ahead of the festive season.
Since the launch of the Silver HUID portal on 1 September last year, more than 77 lakh silver jewellery pieces have been hallmarked with HUID. The six-digit HUID under the Hallmarking System assures traceability of silver jewellery and artefacts.
Consumers are advised to look for the BIS hallmark and verify the HUID through the BIS CARE app when purchasing silver jewellery. It is also recommended to buy only hallmarked silver jewellery from BIS Registered Jewellers to guarantee its purity. Additionally, consumers are urged to obtain a proper invoice for the purchase of silver articles and retain it for future reference.
