Union Home Minister Amit Shah has announced that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partners in all 21 states will implement a common set of laws for marriage, divorce, succession, and adoption across all citizens before the scheduled Lok Sabha elections in 2029. Several states have already made progress towards this goal.
During a speech about the Union government's achievements, Amit Shah declared that the BJP and its NDA partners will introduce the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) before the scheduled Lok Sabha elections in 2029. The UCC aims to establish a common set of laws for marriage, divorce, succession, and adoption across all citizens, as current personal laws are largely based on community-specific religious scriptures.
According to reports, several states ruled by the BJP have made strides towards implementing the UCC. In January 2025, Uttarakhand became the first state to enforce the code after independence. Gujarat, Assam, and Madhya Pradesh have passed similar legislations but are awaiting presidential assent and notification.
In addition, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan governments have established committees to draft Uniform Civil Codes. The Rajasthan Cabinet also approved a bill for such legislation in August. It is worth noting that a common civil code has been in place in Goa since the Portuguese Civil Code was adopted in 1867.
Furthermore, it is essential to mention that introducing a common personal law has long been on the BJP’s agenda, and this move aims to establish equal rights for all citizens across India.
