Former Indian Administrative Services officer Devashish Sharma, belonging to the 2011-batch of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, was nominated by the BJP as their candidate for the upcoming Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election on October 6. The Indian Express reported that Sharma resigned from his position as Nagaon's deputy commissioner on September 3 and joined the BJP on Thursday.
Before serving in Nagaon, Sharma had previously been the deputy commissioner of Morigaon district, which is part of the same Lok Sabha constituency. Sharma was appointed as the deputy commissioner of Nagaon in June 2025, according to The Indian Express.
The Congress party has raised concerns about Sharma’s past actions during his tenure as the deputy commissioner-cum-district election officer and requested the Election Commission to ‘review and scrutinise’ all poll-related actions taken by him. In a letter to the poll body, Congress MP Rakibul Hussain expressed concerns that Sharma was responsible for key aspects of the polls in Nagaon, including electronic voting machines, polling arrangements, staff deployment, and implementing Election Commission directives.
