Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, has reiterated the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s commitment to implementing a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Utter Pradesh if they retain power in the 2027 Assembly elections. Currently, several states have already implemented UCC.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah reaffirmed the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) pledge to implement a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Uttar Pradesh if they win the 2027 Assembly elections, as reported by The Indian Express. During a meeting with party colleagues in Lucknow, Shah stated that if the BJP forms the government in Uttar Pradesh, they will implement UCC in the state.
The proposed UCC aims to introduce a common set of laws governing marriage, divorce, succession, and adoption for all citizens. As reported by PTI, Shah emphasized that UCC has already been implemented in many states and highlighted that if the BJP retains power, they will follow suit in Uttar Pradesh.
In September 20XX, Shah made a statement asserting that governments led by the BJP and its National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partners in 21 states would introduce the Uniform Civil Code before 2029. This promise is still relevant, given the latest declaration.
In response to Shah's statements, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav expressed skepticism, stating that a UCC was 'not worth implementing'. The Opposition leader also criticized the BJP government for failing to implement the Women's Reservation Act passed by the Lok Sabha.
In April 20XX, the Union government introduced the 2026 Constitution 131st Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha to amend the 2023 Women’s Reservation Act and redraw the boundaries of electoral constituencies. The bill requires a two-thirds majority of votes in Parliament to pass, which the ruling NDA does not currently possess.
Uttarakhand was the first state to implement UCC after Independence, doing so in January 2025. Gujarat, Assam, and Madhya Pradesh have passed similar legislation but are yet to receive the president’s assent. Committees have been set up in Maharashtra, West Bengal, and Chhattisgarh to draft proposals. In Rajasthan, the Cabinet approved a bill to introduce the code in August.
