Rahul Gandhi, the leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, has escalated his criticism against the current government by calling for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. In a press conference held in Delhi on Wednesday, Gandhi accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah of manipulating votes, following an investigation by The Indian Express which revealed that two election commissioners had objected 14 times in 10 months to decisions about the panel’s special intensive revision of the electoral rolls. Gandhi claimed that anti-incumbency has ‘disappeared’ from several states in the country because the votes have been stolen. He added that if ‘votes are destroyed’, then ‘our Constitution has been destroyed’. This is not the first time Gandhi has accused the government of manipulating votes; earlier this year, he had questioned the integrity of the Election Commission following allegations of irregularities in the Bihar assembly elections.
