Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, during the inauguration of the Patradevi Martyrs’ Memorial in Goa, reiterated that the memorial symbolizes national unity, courage, and sacrifice made towards Goa's liberation. He emphasized that people from different parts of India came together to sacrifice their lives for Goa's freedom. Among the satyagrahis Mr Singh acknowledged were Sahodara Devi, Karnail Singh Benipal, Madhukar Damodar Chaudhary, and others who participated in the 1955 Satyagraha. The Defence Minister expressed his hope that the memorial would inspire future generations to understand the price paid for freedom and uphold national unity and integrity. He also stated that the Patradevi Satyagraha was not merely a regional struggle but an expression of national consciousness. Recalling the role of the armed forces in Operation Vijay, which led to Goa's liberation from Portuguese rule in 1961, Mr Singh encouraged young visitors to the region to visit the memorial and learn about the freedom fighters, drawing inspiration from their sacrifices. He also highlighted that preserving freedom is a collective responsibility and reminded citizens of this duty. The Defence Minister congratulated Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant and the Goa Government for establishing the memorial, which he predicted would become a pilgrimage-like site for the entire country.
