Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai has granted activist Sharjeel Imam a seven-day interim bail, allowing him to attend his cousin's wedding. This development comes amidst the ongoing investigation into the communal violence of February 2020 between supporters and opponents of the Citizenship Amendment Act.
On Tuesday, jailed activist Sharjeel Imam was granted a seven-day interim bail by Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai. This permission will allow Imam to attend his cousin's wedding, with the bail period commencing on October 4.
This development is significant as it comes amidst ongoing investigations into the communal violence that erupted in North East Delhi in February 2020. The incidents resulted in 53 fatalities, primarily among the Muslim community, and left hundreds injured.
Imam, along with Umar Khalid and other activists, were arrested between January 2020 and September 2020 for their alleged involvement. The accused have been charged under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, the Arms Act, and sections of the Indian Penal Code.
The police have alleged that the violence was part of a larger conspiracy to tarnish the Narendra Modi government and was orchestrated by those opposing the amended Citizenship Act. Previously, on July 4, a Delhi court rejected Imam and Khalid’s bail petition.
