Delhi Lieutenant Governor chairs meeting with college principals to discuss student safety concerns, directing improvements in areas such as street lighting, CCTV coverage, and last-mile connectivity.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu convened a meeting with the principals of women's colleges affiliated with Delhi University to address student safety issues around campus and transit routes. Attendees included senior officers from Delhi Police, Transport Department, Public Works Department (PWD), Delhi Development Authority (DDA), and Delhi Metro. The key concerns raised by the principals and others centered on unsafe last-mile connectivity, e-rickshaws, encroached footpaths, unregulated vending, dark spots, inadequate lighting, unsafe parks near campuses, public toilets, obscene flashing, the need for more Pink Booths, and increased patrolling. In response, Mr Sandhu instructed the PWD and MCD to enhance street lighting, CCTV coverage, police patrolling, and PCR deployment around colleges. He also directed the Transport Department to improve last-mile connectivity and regulate e-rickshaws, while the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) was tasked with clearing encroachments and vulnerable spots. Further proposals included a student safety application and an Inter-College Women Safety Committee, with regular reviews every fortnight. Emphasizing the importance of instilling security and trust among students, Mr Sandhu highlighted that these objectives are top priorities for the Delhi Government.
