The Delhi Police arrested three contractors and reported that at least five individuals are feared trapped under the debris of a collapsed building in Old Delhi's Chawri Bazar, as per Hindustan Times. The incident was flagged by the police as unauthorized construction five months prior.
The Delhi Police have apprehended three contractors, identified as Siraj, Tajuddin, and Furkan, in connection with the collapse of a building under construction in Old Delhi's crowded Chawri Bazar area. This incident occurred on October 7th and resulted in the loss of two lives, according to reports by Hindustan Times. As of Friday morning, at least five individuals are feared trapped beneath the debris.
The arrests were made from Sirohi village in Faridabad’s Dauj tehsil. The contractors have been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, as reported by Hindustan Times.
Prior to the collapse, the Delhi Police had flagged unauthorized construction at the property five months earlier. In a letter to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), the police urged action against the construction. The MCD acknowledged receiving this communication and stated that in April, they had warned the owner of the three-storey building to undertake repairs to ensure structural safety.
On Thursday, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced that the municipal corporation had suspended a junior engineer and an assistant engineer due to their role in the construction process of the collapsed building in Chawri Bazar. This suspension comes two months after seven persons were killed after a five-storey building in Satya Niketan collapsed on September 6.
The Hindustan Times also reported that this is not the first such incident in Delhi. On October 7, five persons were killed as a four-storey building collapsed in northeast Delhi’s Seemapuri.
