The Delhi Police has imposed restrictions, cancelled train services, and visited various public places to discourage people from joining a protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The Delhi Police has taken measures to prevent gatherings, travel within the city, and protests in response to an upcoming demonstration at Jantar Mantar calling for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Since late Thursday night, the police have been making public announcements near Parliament warning that Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita is in effect, which prohibits gatherings of four or more persons, processions, and road blockades.
The police personnel are also visiting colleges, mosques, resident welfare associations, and other public places to discourage people from joining the protest. Trains scheduled to arrive in Delhi between 4 am and 2 pm on Saturday have been cancelled, while the police have sought the closure of 57 metro stations.
The protesters have raised concerns after The Indian Express’ September 23 investigation showed that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had formally objected 14 times in 10 months to decisions by the poll panel related to the special intensive revision of voter rolls, stating that some had been taken without their knowledge.
Since the exercise began in June 2025, the SIR has faced questions about the manner and pace of its implementation, amid concerns that it could deny genuine electors their right to vote and shape election outcomes. The Opposition has also demanded the removal of Kumar. However, Kumar has not yet commented on The Indian Express’ investigation.
