The Democratic Party has achieved a sweeping victory in the 2026 midterm elections, capturing control of both houses of Congress and ending Republican rule over the legislative branch.
In an unexpected turn of events, the Democratic Party has won the House of Representatives and the Senate in the United States, marking the end of the Republican Party's tenure as the ruling party in Congress.
According to the latest results, Democrats have garnered at least 228 seats in the 435-member House, surpassing the 218-seat majority requirement. In the Senate, they have won 54 seats compared to Republicans' 44, with two seats still undecided.
The Democratic victories extend beyond traditional Republican strongholds such as Texas, South Carolina, Kansas, Iowa, and Ohio, indicating a shift in the political landscape.
The election results reflect a voter backlash against the Trump administration’s economic and foreign policies. Economic concerns, particularly inflation and rising fuel prices, have emerged as major factors behind the Republican setback. The prolonged US-Israeli conflict with Iran, which has led to disruptions in global energy supplies and escalating fuel costs, has also been a significant campaign issue.
With control of both chambers, Democrats will now have greater powers to scrutinize the Trump administration, launch congressional investigations, and block key legislative proposals and presidential nominations. However, President Trump will remain in office, retaining his executive powers and the ability to veto legislation.
