The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the licenses of several establishments in Mumbai, including a canteen at Nair Hospital and the 108-year-old Olympia Coffee House, due to violations of safety and health norms.
On Thursday, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) took action against several establishments for alleged violations of food safety norms. Among them was the canteen at the civic-run Nair Hospital in Mumbai and the Olympia Coffee House in Colaba. According to reports by PTI, India Today, and The Indian Express, the FDA's inspection found that the Nair Hospital's canteen was violating safety and health norms, leading to the suspension of its license.
Shailesh Mohite, the Dean of Nair Hospital, told Scroll that the FDA conducted inspections at the hospital on February 12 when the mess was closed after lunch. Mohite added that the hospital authorities were yet to receive a report from the agency about the alleged violations it had found.
The FDA's inspection at Olympia Coffee House found a urinal in the food storage area, an infestation of cockroaches and flies, meat blood residue in the refrigerator, and food being handled directly on the floor. Additionally, the utensil-washing facilities were unhygienic, the water used was unclean, raw vegetarian and non-vegetarian food were not segregated properly, and wooden chopping boards were damaged. Food handlers were also found not wearing appropriate protective clothing, and 34 out of 35 food handlers had not undergone mandatory food-safety training. The water-testing reports and sanitation records were also unavailable at the restaurant.
In addition to these establishments, the FDA suspended the license of Blink Commerce Private Limited in Chembur for similar alleged violations. Other establishments in Mumbai whose licenses were suspended following inspections are Vishwas Sweets and Snacks and A-1 General & Dry Fruits in Ghatkopar West, Milan Punjab in Worli, and Sadguru Sweets in Malad East.
The action was part of the FDA’s ongoing drive against eateries and other establishments for alleged violations of food safety norms during the festive season. On Tuesday, the FDA suspended the licenses of four Mumbai restaurants – Colaba’s iconic Café Mondegar, Maharashtra Biryani Center in Kandivali East, Tribhuvan Dairy Farm in Ghatkopar West, and Mahavir Cashew & Foods Private Limited in Ghatkopar East.
