In his speech at the 62nd Munich Security Conference, External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar highlighted various strategies and potential areas of cooperation for Emerging and Middle Powers (EMPs) in a changing global landscape.

At the 62nd Munich Security Conference in New Delhi, External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar emphasized the importance of cooperation among Emerging and Middle Powers (EMPs). He stated that these powers originate from both Global South and Global North and are united in their goal of being more relevant. According to Dr Jaishankar, international peace and security, supply chain resilience, and connectivity are crucial agendas for EMPs.

The Minister pointed out that the world is undergoing a substantial change in agenda and landscape due to the repositioning of the US, the rise of China, and greater interdependence. He underscored that the approach of EMPs is to de-risk and diversify, and pursue agenda-based cooperation. This strategy leads to a multipolar, multi-aligned world with small groups.

Dr Jaishankar noted that it is natural for emerging and middle powers to have cooperation with both the US and China. As an example of emerging middle-power cooperation, he cited the Quad. In the field of connectivity, he mentioned the India-Middle East-Europe Connectivity Corridor, the International North-South Transport Corridor, and the Northern Sea Route.

Later in conversation with President of Munich Security Conference, Wolfgang Ischinger, and State Secretary, Germany’s Federal Foreign Office, Bernard Kotsch, Dr Jaishankar discussed India's high growth potential and demography that can sustain this level of growth. He highlighted advanced manufacturing, semiconductors, AI, and space capabilities as areas where an India-EU partnership can increase.

The External Affairs Minister also emphasized that many Indian defense start-ups have found partners abroad, and defense exports are growing rapidly.
