The Election Commission of India orders reverification of all names added, deleted or amended in Uttar Pradesh's electoral rolls through Forms 6, 7 and 8 due to alleged irregularities.
The Election Commission (EC) of India ordered the reverification of all names added, deleted or amended in Uttar Pradesh’s electoral rolls through Forms 6, 7 and 8 by computer assistants in all 403 Assembly constituencies. The forms are used for registering new voters, deleting names, and correcting entries.
The order came after the Congress party alleged on Wednesday that more than 13,000 voter names had been replaced with others in the Pilibhit Sadar Assembly constituency. An investigation by the district election officer found that a computer assistant had entered 13,779 Form 8 applications, which is used for correcting details or shifting a voter’s residence.
In response to the allegations, Uttar Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer Navdeep Rinwa said that irregularities were found in 10,470 electoral roll entries in the constituency. He announced legal action against the current and former electoral registration officers in the constituency and terminated the services of a computer assistant at the Voter Registration Centre in Pilibhit.
The second phase of the voter roll revision ended on April 10, during which more than two crore (13.2%) names were deleted from the final rolls, leaving Uttar Pradesh with over 15 crore electors.
