Justice RC Chavan resigned from the Maharashtra panel drafting Uniform Civil Code due to disagreements over its functioning, involvement of an official from outside the state, and lack of consideration for members' suggestions.
Former High Court Justice RC Chavan has resigned from a seven-member panel set up by the Maharashtra government to prepare a draft for implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). According to PTI, Chavan announced his resignation on Saturday. In his resignation letter, he expressed disagreements over the functioning of the panel and the involvement of an official from outside the state.
Chavan alleged that meetings were concluded without substantive discussions and that suggestions for framing a questionnaire to seek public views were not considered. He further claimed that items on the agenda such as confirmation of minutes, website modifications, and finalisation of questionnaires were disposed of quickly on the directions of the chairperson.
Chavan also highlighted that an officer from outside the state was involved in the panel, stating that Maharashtra officers might feel incompetent to handle the duty or that the out-of-state official may not have known where to fit into the panel’s functioning. Chavan added that he was vacating his seat on the committee by resigning so that the government could fill in the blank promptly.
The other members of the panel include retired Supreme Court Justice Ranjana Desai, former Bombay High Court judge SG Mehare, former state Chief Secretary DK Jain, former Advocate General Virendra Saraf, constitutional expert Ramesh Patange, and educationist Suvarna Rawal.
The committee had been set up in July and was expected to submit its report within six months as the government plans to introduce the draft legislation in the Winter Session of the Assembly.
