The delivery marks a significant step forward for the Tejas Mk1A fighter jet programme in India, as it receives 3 F404-IN20 engines from GE Aerospace under a contract signed in 2021. The engines are intended to equip the initial fleet of Tejas Mk1A jets, with a total order for 99 power plants. Previously, the programme has faced years of delivery bottlenecks due to international supply chain constraints.
These constraints have left completed airframes waiting on engine integration. With this latest delivery from GE Aerospace, the country's domestic Tejas Mk1A fighter jet programme gains a crucial boost and moves closer to operational readiness.
