The United Nations has issued a warning about the upcoming powerful El Niño event and its potential impacts on various regions worldwide, including Latin America, Africa, Asia, and the Pacific.
The United Nations (UN) has raised concerns regarding an approaching El Niño, a meteorological phenomenon known for causing extreme weather conditions. UN Under-Secretary-General Tom Fletcher addressed these concerns at a news conference in Geneva, describing the upcoming El Niño as a 'wrecking ball'. He emphasized the urgent need for global action to mitigate its effects.
Fletcher further stated that the next two weeks are critical for preparedness. He urged governments, civil society, businesses, and international partners to mobilize resources and keep disaster response capacities ready. Fletcher warned of possible far-reaching consequences, including fueling conflict, displacement, and migration beyond affected regions.
The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) chief, Celeste Saulo, predicted that El Niño could potentially reach an unprecedented strength towards the end of this year. She warned that Southeast Asia might face higher temperatures, reduced rainfall, increased wildfire and smoke hazards, and mounting pressure on agriculture and water supplies. These conditions could persist long after the event itself.
