The Gujarat Police conducted raids on Monday to seize electronic devices of journalist Ravi Nair, his son, and a colleague. The matter pertains to an article by Nair in The Washington Post about Life Insurance Corporation's investments into the Adani Group.

On Monday afternoon, the Gujarat Police seized electronic devices belonging to journalist Ravi Nair, his son, and a colleague in simultaneous raids conducted in Kerala and Delhi. According to a person familiar with the situation, this action was taken in relation to social media posts by Nair in October regarding an article he had written for The Washington Post about Life Insurance Corporation’s (LIC) investments into the Adani Group.

Paranjoy Guha Thakurta, who has co-authored a book and several articles with Nair, stated that Nair was not in Delhi at the time of the raid, but his son's laptop and a colleague's iPad present there were seized. Despite having no connection to the case, these devices were taken by the police. Guha Thakurta also revealed that two of Nair's phones were seized while he was in Kerala.

The first information report (FIR) against Nair is based on his social media posts related to the article, not the article itself. The FIR lists sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita pertaining to cheating and dishonesty, forgery committed with intent to harm reputation, and using fake or forged paper or digital file as real.

The Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited filed the FIR alleging that Nair ‘wrote and posted false and fabricated information’ that ‘attempted to tarnish the image and reputation of the Adani Group of Companies’. The complainant claimed that the social media posts by Nair had caused ‘substantial financial losses’ to the Adani Group and its domestic and international investors.
