An altercation took place between Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee and the Kolkata Police when security personnel from the municipal corporation arrived at a TMC office with an alleged illegal notice to remove a banner. A TMC worker was detained, and the party accused the police of assaulting Banerjee and TMC MP Derek O’Brien, as well as pushing and heckling TMC supporters and staff.

An altercation occurred between Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee and the Kolkata Police on Thursday. The incident took place when security personnel and officials from the municipal corporation arrived at a TMC office on Camac Street with an alleged illegal notice to remove a banner. According to the TMC, the police 'barged into' Banerjee's office with the notice. A video posted by PTI shows a TMC worker being detained. The TMC further claimed that the police entered the office without displaying a valid notice.

The TMC alleged that the police 'assaulted' Banerjee, TMC MP Derek O’Brien, and 'pushed and heckled' TMC supporters and staff. It further alleged that the clothes of the office’s women security personnel were torn during the incident.

TMC stated its intention to approach the court against what it describes as 'brutality, harassment, and illegal action/trespassing' by the police. In response, Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee claimed that West Bengal is 'witnessing the steady erosion of constitutional governance and an alarming descent' into a police state.

Banerjee further stated on social media that when the power of the state operates without constitutional restraint, the judiciary becomes the last line of defence. He added that if judicial intervention does not come when fundamental rights are being undermined, what is at stake is no longer merely the liberty of individuals. It is the survival of democracy itself.

TMC shared videos on social media showing hours of mayhem allegedly unleashed upon Banerjee, his team, and others by the BJP police.
