Opposition parties led by Rahul Gandhi have called for the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations of electoral irregularities, including the intentional deletion of 13 crore voters. The demand follows a symbolic 'public impeachment' of Kumar and nationwide protests.
On Sunday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi led a rally at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan alongside several opposition leaders, chief ministers, and the INDIA bloc demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged electoral irregularities. The rally followed a symbolic 'public impeachment' of Kumar by the opposition on Saturday, accusing him of conspiring to steal elections by ensuring the intentional deletion of 13 crore voters.
Gandhi accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah of colluding with Kumar to secure their positions. He described the alleged theft of votes as 'treason' and a 'rarest of rare case'.
The opposition parties further alleged that Kumar had acted at the behest of Modi and Shah.
Protests have been held since October 2 over concerns about the functioning of the Election Commission and alleged irregularities in how the voter roll is being revised. The trigger for the protests was a September 23 investigation by The Indian Express which revealed that two election commissioners had formally objected to decisions related to the special intensive revision without their knowledge.
