India has made a strategic move by appointing a Defense Attache to Brussels, as confirmed by Sibi George, Secretary (West) in the External Affairs Ministry. This decision comes following Belgium's placement of a Defence Attache in New Delhi earlier this year. According to George, significant progress can be expected in defense engagement between India and Belgium, including in defense production. He also highlighted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Belgian Prime Minister have set a target to double bilateral trade in the next five years, currently valued at approximately 13 billion US dollars.
In addition, George emphasised a clear focus on three Ts – Trade, Technology, and Talent. Prime Minister Modi has invited Belgian universities and premier academic institutions to open campuses in India. Furthermore, Belgium was invited to participate in the WAVES 2.0.
Regarding international conflicts, both sides exchanged views on major developments, including recent events in Ukraine and West Asia. Both parties reaffirmed support for efforts towards a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace through dialogue and diplomacy in Ukraine, and underscored the importance of dialogue and diplomatic engagement to address challenges in West Asia in a peaceful manner.
