On August 12, 2026, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi marked World Elephant Day by acknowledging the integral part wild Asian elephants play in India's ecological heritage. He expressed his joy at the fact that India houses over 60% of the global population of these elephants.
The Prime Minister noted that our nation has 33 Elephant Reserves, which provide habitats for these majestic creatures and strengthen conservation efforts for their long-term survival. Shri Modi also expressed pride in all forest personnel, scientists, veterinarians, mahouts, and the local communities who are integral to these initiatives.
In a social media post on X, Modi emphasized his appreciation for the role India plays in protecting elephants and its commitment to conservation efforts. He stated: 'On World Elephant Day, we celebrate the majestic elephant which has remained an integral part of India’s ecological heritage. It is gladdening that India is home to over 60% of the world’s wild Asian elephants.'
The post also highlighted the existence of 33 Elephant Reserves in India, stressing their importance in providing habitats for these creatures and reinforcing conservation efforts.
