The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) called for a meeting with the Pakistani charge d'affaires to express 'a strong protest' over the collision between an Indian Navy ship and a Pakistani naval vessel in international waters within the Arabian Sea. The incident occurred, but the exact timing remains unclear.
On Wednesday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) summoned the Pakistani charge d'affaires to register a ‘strong protest’ about the collision of a Pakistani naval vessel with an Indian Navy ship. According to the MEA, this incident occurred in international waters within the Arabian Sea, though the exact time of the collision remains unclear.
The Ministry stated that while the collision did not result in significant damage to the Indian ship, it was still concerned about the 'unacceptable and unprofessional' conduct of Pakistani naval units. The MEA further explained that this conduct contravened a 1991 bilateral agreement under which advance notices are provided for military exercises, manoeuvres, and movements of troops.
The Pakistani charge d'affaires was asked to convey New Delhi’s concerns to Islamabad, emphasizing the need for all military units to observe due care and respect bilateral agreements to prevent a repeat of such incidents. The Indian charge d'affaires in Islamabad was also told to lodge a similar protest with Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Both countries’ diplomatic missions have been led by chargés d'affaires instead of high commissioners after Pakistan downgraded its ties with India in August 2019 over New Delhi’s decision to abrogate the special status of Jammu and Kashmir.
