On August 26, 2026, Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah expressed condolences for the tragic loss of lives due to the floods in Nepal and stated that the Government of India stands with Nepal during this crisis. The Minister spoke with the Chief Ministers of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh regarding the disaster in Nepal, where a sudden rise in river water level in the Trishuli river near the Nepal–China border has been reported due to suspected flash flood or Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) activity.
The impact of the flood is likely to travel downstream in the Gandak river, in India. In response, the states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh have initiated necessary evacuations and provided support to local communities near the India-Nepal border. The local administration, rescue teams, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and officers from various ministries are on high alert in affected border areas.
According to reports from the Central Water Commission (CWC) and media, water levels on Nepal side reservoirs have been reducing, indicating that the situation is under control. Additionally, officers of Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Ministry of Jal Shakti, and Ministry of Defence are continuously monitoring the situation.
There are reports of missing Indian tourists in Nepal territory, and the MEA/Indian Embassy in Kathmandu has issued emergency numbers for assistance and information regarding Indian nationals affected by the flash floods in Nepal.
