The Indian Navy has commissioned its second Diving Support Vessel of the Nistar-class, INS Nipun, at Naval Dockyard, Mumbai. The vessel will provide essential support for divers and underwater operations in demanding sea conditions.
On Tuesday, the Indian Navy officially commissioned INS Nipun, the second Diving Support Vessel (DSV) of the Nistar-class, at Naval Dockyard, Mumbai. During the commissioning ceremony, Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, stated that amid a period of strategic churn, INS Nipun is going to be a powerful addition to the Navy’s specialized underwater capabilities required for multi-domain deep-sea operations at sea.
Admiral Swaminathan further explained that INS Nipun will significantly enhance the Western Naval Command’s capabilities for complex underwater operations as a dedicated diving support and submarine rescue vessel. The ship, indigenously designed and constructed by Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), Visakhapatnam, is a purpose-built platform designed to support a wide spectrum of diving and underwater operations.
INS Nipun is equipped with modern diving systems and underwater intervention capabilities. The ship incorporates modern systems for navigation, platform management, and precise station-keeping, complemented by specialised facilities for diving, underwater intervention, and medical support.
