The Trinamool Congress (TMC) faction's nominee for the Assembly bye-election in Rejinagar and another candidate for Nandigram have withdrawn their candidatures.
The TMC faction, led by Mamata Banerjee, had initially fielded Rabiul Alam Chowdhury for the October 6 election in Rejinagar. However, Chowdhury made a U-turn on Saturday and announced his withdrawal from the race, reversing an earlier decision to contest the polls as instructed by Mamata Banerjee. This development comes a day after Sanchita Pradhan, the faction’s candidate for the bye-poll in Nandigram, withdrew her nomination. The bye-poll in Rejinagar was necessitated after Aam Janata Unnayan Party chief Humayun Kabir vacated the seat. Sanchita Pradhan's withdrawal came following photographs of her meeting West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari being shared online. After Sanchita Pradhan withdrew her nomination, Mamata Banerjee announced that her faction would support Congress candidate Milan Pradhan in Nandigram to strengthen the Opposition INDIA bloc. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has fielded Shankharav Sarkar for the Rejinagar bye-election, while the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has nominated Syed Asad Ali and the Congress has fielded Mohammad Abdullahil Kafi.
