Uttar Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer Navdeep Rinwa announced irregularities found in over 10,000 entries of the electoral roll of the Pilibhit Assembly constituency. Legal action will be taken against current and former electoral registration officers.
The Uttar Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer, Navdeep Rinwa, announced on Thursday that irregularities have been found in 10,470 entries of the Pilibhit Assembly constituency's electoral roll after a special intensive revision. The poll panel will take legal action against the current and former electoral registration officers in the constituency, while the services of a computer assistant at the Voter Registration Centre of Pilibhit will be terminated.
Rinwa stated that an investigation by the Pilibhit district election officer showed that the computer assistant had entered 13,779 Form 8 applications, meant for shifting residence and correcting details in an existing electoral roll. However, no forms or records related to any of these entries were found available in the office.
Rinwa added that of the total, 10,470 forms for 'corrections' were approved. Irregularities were found in all of them.
The Congress party had previously alleged that more than 13,000 voters' names were replaced with others after the final electoral list was released in April following the special intensive revision. The voter identity card numbers and serial numbers of these voters remained the same.
Party leader Supriya Shrinate had pointed out that the alleged discrepancies were significant given the electoral arithmetic in Pilibhit Sadar, where Bharatiya Janata Party leader Sanjay Gangwar won the seat by a margin of less than 7,000 votes in the 2022 Assembly polls.
