Jamia Millia Islamia university has shifted all its classes online due to ongoing student protests demanding elections for the constitution of the students’ union.
On Saturday, Jamia Millia Islamia university announced that all classes would be conducted online until further notice. This decision comes amidst protests on campus, where students have been demanding elections for the students' union since October 12. Five students have been on a hunger strike since then to press for this demand.
On October 16, the university took disciplinary action against three of these students, rusticating one, suspending two, and banning all three from entering the campus for a year. This action by the university administration has escalated the protests.
Students have also been alleging that the university administration and Delhi police are using brutal force to remove them from the campus. A joint statement by student organisations claimed that more than 100 security guards entered the protest site and manhandled students on hunger strike.
The university has not held student union elections since 2006. The university administration, in a meeting with protesting students earlier on Saturday, constituted a committee to draft the constitution of its students’ union. However, students have expressed concern that this is a delaying tactic and they will continue their hunger strike until the university releases the election notification.
