Madhya Pradesh farmers protesting for their demands

Amid ongoing farmers' agitation in Madhya Pradesh, the state's Agriculture Minister has written to the Union Agriculture Minister requesting an increase in the procurement target for summer moong.

In response to the escalating farmers' agitation over various demands, including the procurement of summer moong, Madhya Pradesh's Agriculture Minister, Shri Aidal Singh Kansana, met with representatives of farmers' organisations. The minister listened to their concerns with seriousness and assured them that the State Government is committed to addressing all issues related to farmers' grievances promptly and positively. According to the minister, officials have been directed to accord top priority to resolving farmers' issues, particularly those concerning moong procurement.

During the meeting held at the Ministry, representatives of farmers' organisations presented their demands and concerns in detail. The Agriculture Minister assured them that each issue would be examined thoroughly and timely decisions would be taken in coordination with the concerned departments.

In a subsequent development, Shri Kansana wrote to Union Agriculture Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, requesting an increase in the procurement target for summer moong under the Price Support Scheme (PSS). Based on the previous year's final estimates and third advance estimates for the current year, the state's average productivity is estimated at 1,410 kg per hectare, resulting in an estimated production of 20.16 lakh metric tonnes. Last year, Madhya Pradesh procured 7.72 lakh metric tonnes of summer moong. The minister argued that providing farmers with the maximum benefit of the Minimum Support Price (MSP) is essential to ensure remunerative returns and encourage continued pulse cultivation.

The Agriculture Minister requested the Union Government to revise Madhya Pradesh's procurement target for the 2026–27 marketing year under the Price Support Scheme (PSS) by reallocating the unutilised share from other summer moong-producing states. He urged the Centre to increase the state's procurement limit to 8.06 lakh metric tonnes, equivalent to 40 per cent of the state's estimated summer moong production.
