The Ministry of Coal, along with Coal India Limited (CIL), launched a framework for CSR initiatives and celebrated key milestones under the Thalassemia Bal Sewa Yojana (TBSY) and Nanha Sa Dil at an event in New Delhi. The Union Minister for Coal and Mines, G. Kishan Reddy, attended the event.
The Ministry of Coal, in collaboration with Coal India Limited (CIL), organized an event on September 8, 2026, to celebrate significant achievements under their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives – the Thalassemia Bal Sewa Yojana (TBSY) and Nanha Sa Dil. The event took place in New Delhi, attended by dignitaries such as Shri G. Kishan Reddy, Union Minister for Coal and Mines, Shri Satish Chandra Dubey, Union Minister of State for Coal and Mines, and Shri Vikram Dev Dutt, Secretary to the Government of India, Ministry of Coal, among others.
Thalassemia Bal Sewa Yojana (TBSY)
TBSY was launched to address the treatment needs of children suffering from Thalassemia and Aplastic Anaemia – rare genetic blood disorders. Initially started with 4 hospitals, TBSY has expanded to include 21 empanelled hospitals across India. CIL is the only Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) in India to undertake such a healthcare initiative for these disorders.
Under the scheme, up to Rs. 10 lakh per patient is extended directly to empanelled hospitals for Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT), amounting to a total outlay of Rs. 130 crore across four phases. So far, more than 1,050 BMTs have been completed, with the majority of treated children now living healthy lives.
Nanha Sa Dil
Launched in partnership with the Sri Sathya Sai Health and Education Trust, Nanha Sa Dil addresses Congenital Heart Defects (CHD) affecting approximately 2.4 lakh newborns annually in India, of whom only about 5 percent receive timely treatment.
The initiative began with four districts of Jharkhand by CIL, and has since been expanded through its subsidiary companies SECL, CCL, NCL and WCL. Over 2 lakh children have been screened using modern diagnostic tools, and more than 1,500 corrective surgeries have been completed, entirely free of cost to patient families, including travel and hospitalization expenses.
Comprehensive CSR Framework for Indian Coal Companies
The Ministry of Coal launched a sector-specific CSR framework, marking a significant step towards outcome-oriented CSR. Prepared by the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA), this framework will guide impactful and outcome-oriented CSR initiatives in areas benefiting coal mining communities.
