Eleven individuals have died and over 80 others have fallen ill in Madhya Pradesh's Sagar district due to the consumption of spurious liquor originating from Uttar Pradesh's Lalitpur. Several suspensions have been made as part of the investigation.
In a tragic turn of events, eleven people lost their lives over two days in Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar district due to the consumption of spurious liquor. Approximately 80 individuals from four to five villages in the Banda tehsil have fallen ill and been admitted to hospitals.
The first death was reported at Banda Civil Hospital on Saturday night, with subsequent fatalities taking place from early Sunday morning. Those who died hailed from six villages – Ghooghra Khurd, Nauraj, Bamoora, Patan, Chauka and Dalpatpur.
Three cases have been registered based on the complaints of the victims. Sagar Range Deputy Inspector General of Police Shashindra Chouhan has suspended four police officials – the Banda Police station house officer, an outpost in-charge, Sagar Assistant Excise Commissioner Kirti Dubey, and Additional District Excise Officer Dilip Kandaka – as part of the investigation. Further suspensions include Sub-Inspector Roshani Urathi and Area Deputy Commissioner Neerja Shrivastava.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the liquor originated from Uttar Pradesh’s Lalitpur. Sagar Collector Pratibha Pal stated that initial inquiries indicated a local gang in Lalitpur supplies poisonous liquor, and this area being adjacent to Uttar Pradesh has contributed to this issue coming to light.
Madhya Pradesh Excise Commissioner Deepak Saxena commented that the packaging of the liquor looked original, like that of locally made brands. ‘The agent of the licensed liquor seller sold it and people thought it was genuine,’ he said.
