The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to the Rajasthan Chief Secretary and Superintendent of Police, seeking details on a reported incident where a woman was beaten and paraded for cutting her hair.
The NHRC has taken notice of a media report detailing an incident that occurred in Rajasthan's Banswara on the 1st of this month. According to the report, a woman was allegedly beaten with sticks and paraded by her husband and relatives after she forcibly cut her hair. The commission noted that if the contents of the media report are verified, they potentially violate the victim's rights to life and dignity.
The incident came to light when a video of it surfaced on social media on the 4th of this month, according to another report carried by the media.
Taking suo motu cognizance, the Commission has demanded the status of the investigation and any compensation paid to the victim from the Rajasthan government and police. The notices were issued on the grounds that the reported incident, if true, raises serious issues of violation of the victim’s rights.
